The Influence of the Experimental Methodology on the QED Theoretical Uncertainties on the Measurement of MW at LEP
نویسنده
چکیده
Previous studies of the QED systematic uncertainties on the LEP measurement of the W-boson mass, MW, have used idealized event selections and fitting procedures. In this paper, the Monte Carlo tandem of KoralW and YFSWW is used to investigate how the full experimental MW extraction procedure affects these estimates. It is found that the kinematic fitting used in the experimental determination of MW enhances the sensitivity to QED corrections involving real photon production. It is concluded that the previous estimates of the QED theoretical uncertainty on the LEP2 MW measurement may be too small. A simple procedure for approximating the effect of the kinematic fit at the level of the generated four fermions is proposed. This procedure would allow previous theoretical studies to be repeated using a much closer approximation of the real experimental mass extraction method. Finally, the possibility of setting experimental limits on O(α) theoretical uncertainties using identified ee → WWγ events is discussed.

The Top Quark and the Higgs Boson Mass from Lep Slc and Cdf Data
The impact of the new experimental data from LEP, SLC and CDF on the top quark mass mtop and the Higgs boson mass mHiggs is investigated. The determinations of mtop and of an upper bound on mHiggs are given, taking into account the experimental error on the QED coupling constant αem and on the b quark mass mb. The relevance of higher order theoretical uncertainties is pointed out. Submitted to ...
متن کاملMeasurement of MW from LEP2
In 1997 each LEP experiment collected approximately 55 pb −1 of data at a center-of-mass energy of 183 GeV. These data yield a sample of candidate e + e − → W + W − events from which the mass of the W boson, MW, is measured. The LEP combined result, including data taken at √ s = 161 and 172 GeV and assuming the Standard Model relation between the W decay width and mass, is MW = 80.35 ± 0.07(exp...
متن کاملApplication of Salt Additives and Response Surface Methodology for Optimization of PVDF Hollow Fiber Membrane in DCMD and AGMD Processes
In this study, the influence of the salts as an additive on the performance of the membrane was investigated and an extensive work was performed to optimize PVDF hollow fiber membranes through a response surface methodology (RSM). The prepared membranes were characterized by SEM, contact angle and LEP measurement. Then, the RSM was used for the optimization of surface pore size, porosity and hy...
متن کاملhep - ph / 9702323 BROWN - TA - 549 FIELD THEORY FOR THE STANDARD MODEL
We review the origin of the standard electroweak model and discuss in great detail the on-shell renormalization scheme of the standard model as a field theory. Oneloop radiative corrections are calculated by the dimensional regularization and the dominant higher-order corrections are also discussed. We then show how well the standard model withstands the precision test against the LEP and SLD d...
متن کاملQED second order corrections on the speed of light at low temperature
We want to study thermal corrections on the speed of light at low temperature considering temperature dependence of photon vacuum polarization tensor at two-loop level in the standard QED. It is found that the heat bath behaves as a dispersive medium for the propagation of light and reduces its speed proportional to the second order of temperature. Similarities and differences, in light ...
